Husband who killed British wife Caroline Crouch attacked by inmate in Greek jail

Babis Anagnostopoulos has appealed against his life sentence and been transferred to a notorious prison since being convicted of suffocating the 20-year-old at their Athens home

The man who murdered his British wife Caroline Crouch has been attacked by a fellow inmate in a Greek jail, according to his lawyer.

Babis Anagnostopoulos is serving a life sentence for suffocating 20-year-old Caroline in front of their 11-month-old daughter in May last year.

Caroline had been tortured and suffocated with a pillow at their Athens home, with Anagnostopoulos staging a robbery and even hanging the couple’s dog Roxy in a bid to cover his tracks.

The 34-year-old claimed that an Albanian gang had been responsible for Caroline’s death, only to eventually admit to the killing as his web of lies was exposed.

Anagnostopoulos’ lawyer told The Sun that his client had been attacked in a notorious Athens prison.

In one incident, which was narrowly prevented by prison guards, Papaioannidis said an inmate had told him that he had sought him out and planned to kill him.

“Reports that he said ‘I want to kill him. I came from another prison. I’ve been looking for him’” are true,” Papaioannidis told the outlet.

Anagnostopoulos has been moved from Athens’ ultra-secure Korydallos prison to the Malandrinos facility.

His lawyer claimed that petitions to have the former helicopter pilot remain in the Greek capital have been refused.

“He is very worried the new jail houses around 900 hardened criminals and is very hard, very tough,” Papaioannidis added.

Caroline’s father David Crouch recently said that Anagnostopoulos being “incarcerated with fellow murderers, but also perverts of every stripe” in the notorious prison had provided a sliver of consolation.

Anagnostopoulos was sentenced to life in prison last May but has appealed that sentence.

Papaioannidis said that his client will appeal on the grounds that he acted “in the heat of the moment” after an argument with Crouch about their daughter.

Anagnostopoulos’ lies were exposed by data from a smart watch

He will also appeal against testimony by the couple’s marriage counsellor, claiming she was not qualified to provide it.

Anagnostopoulos’ cover-up was eventually uncovered after police found digital evidence that made his timeline of events impossible, including data from Caroline’s smart watch and proof that Anagnostopoulos had been active at a time when he claimed to have been tied up.
