Edwards-Helaire suffered a high ankle sprain in Kansas City’s 30-27 win over the Chargers back on Nov. 20. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said there “was a chance” CEH would be back for the AFC title game but KC opted to keep him on IR. Conventional wisdom would suggest that Edwards-Helaire will dress for Super Bowl LVII so long as he factors into the Chiefs’ gameplan.

High ankle sprains generally take 4-6 weeks to recover from so it is somewhat surprising that CEH hasn’t been back on the field yet. CEH lost his starting gig to Isiah Pacheco and even Jerick McKinnon was getting more touches than Edwards-Helaire before the injury. Edwards-Helaire will certainly want to prove he still has value in the Chiefs offense, and Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said in November that CEH remains in the team’s late-season plans.

“Clyde is the ultimate professional,” Bieniemy said, according to KSHB. “Clyde doesn’t run away from anything. He’s working his tail off, and on top of that he’s helping coach guys up.

“Everyone understands at any given time, anyone may be called upon to be great,” Bieniemy continued. “We’re at that time of year where injuries happen, so you may be called upon throughout the course of the game to define your greatness.”
