Nick Kyrgios shames gym goer with sneaky photo as star claims he’s ’embarrassed’
Tennis bad boy Nick Kyrgios couldn’t hide his second-hand embarrassment after witnessing a trainer who stripped off one layer too many, commenting it could happen “only in Australia”
Outbursts and fits of rage have seen Nick Kyrgios involved in some shameful on-court scenes over the years, but the tennis star’s “embarrassment” was saved for another person this week.
That’s after the world No. 76 uploaded a selfie where one of his fellow gym-goers was the focus. An instructor, no less, as he surreptitiously snapped a shot of the man in question training topless indoors.
“Only in Australia at a national academy and a ‘coach’ / ‘staff’ is in the gym with his shirt off,” Kyrgios wrote to his 474,000 Twitter followers. “Haha these are the people that are supposed to be guiding our youth. I’m embarrassed for real.”
Proper gym etiquette is a contentious battleground some exercise enthusiasts take far more seriously than others. Whether it’s putting free weights back where they belong or neglecting to expose one’s nipples, Kyrgios seemingly adheres on the stricter side.
When asked by one follower what “the big deal” was, Kyrgios suggested the site he was training at maintains higher standards: “It’s a national academy where kids are training. If you knew anything about the standard that European tennis clubs have you would understand the relevance to this tweet.”
The 27-year-old hasn’t played competitively since he lost to Reilly Opelka in the semi-finals of the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston last month. Kyrgios recently missed the French Open for the fifth year, although he’s signalled his intent to return to Roland Garros in 2023.
The Canberra native is already hard at work preparing for the grass season ahead of this year’s Wimbledon Championships. There, he’ll hope to add to his major titles after collecting Australian Open doubles gold alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis in January.
Kyrgios has been enjoying some time off with family in recent weeks but is set to return to action at an ATP 250 event in Stuttgart in early June. The tennis firebrand advanced to the quarter-finals at SW19 on his 2014 debut but has failed to advance beyond the fourth round since then.
Fans of the outspoken talent will be glad to see him getting his reps in both on the court and in the gym. Kyrgios may be accustomed to members of the public getting hot under the collar in his presence, though he’d prefer if they could keep their shirts on in future.
