It’s been nearly a year since software developer Josh Wardle released online puzzle Wordle to the public, in October 2021, yet its popularity shows little sign of dissipating.
The rules of Wordle are very simple, doubtless helping its sudden rise to prominence.
Each day the player has to guess a five-letter word, in six attempts or less. After each guess the letters light up, showing how accurate the prediction was. If a letter goes green it is both in the word, and in the correct position. Yellow indicates the letter is in the word, but has been put in the wrong place, whilst gray means it doesn’t feature at all.
Speaking to Newsweek in January, New Yorker Wardle, originally from the U.K., said he originally designed Wordle “for me and my partner to enjoy” during coronavirus lockdown.
In January 2022, Wordle was sold to the New York Times for a seven-figure sum, though it remains free to play.
Wardle admitted to Newsweek that, despite inventing Wordle, he often struggles with the game.
He said: “Well, I did create Wordle and I’m not very good at it, so there’s your answer! I’m afraid I’m not really the best.
“[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning. She will consistently get it in three goes, which is way, way better than I can ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least four or five attempts.”
The answer to today’s Wordle will be revealed at the end of this article, so scroll down with caution. To help you solve it, Newsweek has provided some hints and tips on the latest puzzle.
